Course Topics

The 70-hour Associate Level course covers the following areas:

  • History and research base of the Orton-Gillingham Approach
  • Phonology and the structure of the English language
  • Phonemic awareness and its role in reading development
  • Alphabetic principle, letter-sound correspondences, and phonics
  • Decoding strategies for single-syllable and multisyllabic words
  • Six syllable types and syllable division principles
  • Morphology: prefixes, suffixes, roots, and base words
  • Encoding (spelling) instruction and techniques
  • Handwriting and the multisensory approach to letter formation
  • Fluency building strategies
  • Reading comprehension in the context of OG instruction
  • Vocabulary development within structured literacy
  • Diagnostic assessment and ongoing progress monitoring
  • Lesson planning and the OG lesson format
  • Materials: use of the pre-made binder and sound deck cards provided with enrollment

Technology Requirements

This is a fully virtual course. Participants will need:

  • A computer or tablet with a camera and microphone
  • Zoom (free account is sufficient)
  • A Google account to access Google Classroom course materials
  • Reliable internet connection

Course materials, assignments, and recordings are distributed through Google Classroom. Participants receive access upon registration confirmation.

Optional Practicum Component

Participants who wish to pursue OGA Associate Level certification may complete an optional supervised practicum component after the course. The practicum involves documented teaching hours with a student with language-based learning disabilities, supervised by an OGA Fellow. Details are provided during the course. Completion of the practicum and a case study are required for formal OGA certification.
